writing name backwards perfectly - why? is this normal?

My 3yo dtds are starting to write their names. They start school in September so nursery is encouraging it. But dtd1 is spelling it backwards. She writes from left to right but say her name was Alice she would write ecilA.
Has anyone come across this?

My DD did this occasionally(though not quite so young!). I think it may not be too unusual.

It's very common and something most children grow out.

Mirror writing isn't uncommon for both right and left handed children. (I assumed that's what the OP meant)

I'm wondering if she should be left handed. She's a mirror twin. No idea if the two things are related?

Ds (5) has written whole sentences like this. He's slowly outgrown it in yr1. It's his downfall as he's left headed but bright academically and school were never worried over it.

Both my kids did this. It was more persistent in the right-handed one. I think it's v common.

At 3, they are doing bloody great writing anything! My DS is nearly 4 1/5, and will write 2 letters of his name, backwards, before getting bored and wondering off!

I used to do it apparently, lots, and turned out ok Right handed and everything. I wouldn't worry!

We have an old book at home where I've written my name backwards on cover.

I presume, what she does that the nursery reminds her of the correct way to write it?

When DD2 did that - I just took out our magnetic letters and we'd make her name on a board in the correct way. And then she would try to write it letter by letter, copying the board.

First I'd cover all the letters but the 1st one. Then let her see the second, etc.

Eventually it became automatic.

Also - you can reinforce left-right orientation by pointing at simple words in the books - C-A-T, D-O-G, etc

I think until children are more experienced, writing to them is just a series of 'shapes'. So if it was a square or a circle it wouldn't matter which way up it went, and that is how they approach it.

It won't take long to get used to doing it properly.

My DS at 4 remains very ambidextrous...but when he writes with his left hand it is mirror writing!

He swaps hands depending on where he is on the page.....

my dd wrote whole sentences in perfect mirror image from age 4 till around 6 or 7. She just outgrew it. She is ambidextrous, don't know if that is connected but she is bright & at 9 reads and writes to v high standard. I thought it was amazing too, id never seen it before:)
