...But I wondered what do you need to do to get your child into the school of preference? Someone who lives near me posted regarding their DC not getting into the local school and the reason being something to do with no input to the CofE life (or similar). We are not of any denomination but I believe that's the school we want our DS to go to.

You need to check the admissions criteria for the school which are on the council website. See which criteria your child would be in then see how many of those children were admitted and how far they live from school. If the school have a religious criteria and you do not meet it you will not be in that admissions category and may be in a lower category so may not get place even if nearest school. Do your research plenty of time in advance. Good luck
