Any advice - Y2 boy struggling with writing

Hi, wondering if anyone can offer advice or experience. My DS is 7, in Y2. He has always struggled with writing and his teacher says he may not make level 2 by the end of Y2. In other areas he is fine, although lacks confidence and asks lots of questions / needs lots of reassurance. But his writing is really bad - handwriting, spelling, grammar, everything! I am starting to worry how he will keep up in KS2.

I'm thinking about an assessment by an Occupational Therapist. Anyone tried this, think it's a good route to go down?
thanks for any advice.

Sounds just like my DD - we asked school SENCO to refer her to the OT as verbally she is way above her yr 2 peers. We have just had an assessment and she is dyspraxic BUT she also has other issues not just writing. Her class teacher suggested a handwriting program called Write from the Start which we worked on daily for 15/20 mins and in 6 months she has great joined up legible handwriting, and with this has come more confidence in doing the actual writing part of her day. She has shot up from a 1c in September to a 2B when they last checked her levels a couple of weeks ago. Our school have been amazing and are refusing to give up on her.

What did the teacher suggest? Any plan of action/interventions? Surely she should be helping you find a solution than just saying he won't make levels.

Thanks, I will look into Write from the start, sounds good. The school aren't doing very much really. Apparently he's not bad enough for the SENCO to be interested. Maybe because his maths and reading are OK - I don't know.

Our Senco told us there was nothing wrong with DD, then I asked when she had last seen her in a classroom, the answer was never! I went to the GP who put a rocket up her for referral. If the school won't refer then the GP will.
