Year 4 spelling help

DS is top set English and according to his teacher 'very very clever' BUT despite excellent reading / comprehension / vocab etc i think his spelling is pretty poor. Teacher doesn't overly focus on spelling with top set as feels there is so much more she can do with them (sigh) so need to help him up his game at home. Can anyone recommend a good book that explains all the rules and has exercises / spelling tests for child to complete?

Hi roseamongthorns:

Two ideas:

CGP literacy books oddly enough explain spelling rules - so why wife becomes wives and why letters double - stop becomes stopped because the o is short vowel sound not long vowel sound. (amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/KS2-English-Literacy-Workbook-Year/dp/184146158X/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1426762549&sr=8-12&keywords=cgp+literacy+books+Year+4). There are books for Year 4 and Year 5.

St Ambrose School has on-line spelling games which DD1 also found useful.
www.saintambrosebarlow.co.uk/16-spellings/48-y4-ed-endings-1 - sometimes the on-line quiz won't correct - but usually it does. Found it really useful - both in giving DD1 practice but also in flagging up when she just didn't know about something or get it.

Squeebles app lets you set your own spellings, and is quite fun (I'm told).

And this will probably help as well:

An inexpensive and easy to use book, that can encourage children with reading, spelling and writing, and really help them to understand Phonics, is reviewed in the MN Book Reviews section. Just search ‘Phonics’.

thanks everyone - am big fan of squeebles already but think the CGP book sounds just the ticket
