Modern fiction for children aged 7-11

I'm trying to improve my knowledge of modern fiction student teacher and i'm in need of suggestions

I'm all Morpugo'd out I think

I've read...
Street child
Oranges in no man's land
Varjak paw
The firework maker's daughter
Holes
I was a rat

Plus lots of Morpugo

I'm not going near beast quest or wimpy kid

Any suggestions?

Just came on to say Wonder by R.J. Palacio, but Taffeta has beaten me to it.

I haven't yet read it myself, but 10 year old DS2 said it's the Best Book Ever.

smugmumofboys - DS who was 10 at the time, and I read it together. He's not a fiction fan but loved it. I struggled not to blub during some of my chapters. Blush

It was just perfect for him at that age. Answered so many social questions he had.

He has warned me that 'you'll probably cry' as I'm a bit of a weeper these days. I'll definitely read it.

I just gave him the companion book, 365 Days of Wonder and he's thrilled.

my daughter likes the Maisie Hitchins books by Holly Webb (and all her animal stories).
She has recently discovered Gwyneth Rees, particularly loves the Super Sister books.
others she has enjoyed include various Dick King Smith, some Enid Blyton (naughtiest girl), The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy and thousands of books about animals. oh and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

she is 7. she won't read anything sad so 99% of Morpurgo stuff is banned.

What on earth is wrong with Wimpy Kid?Hmm

My 3 are exceptional readers and all were weaned on WK.Said books have got millions of kids reading.

Beast Quest was a fab bridge to Percy Jackson and The Hobbit.

Kids reading a lot makes them good readers,reading literature they enjoy is key.For some that will be BQ,WP et al for a while or longer.My 11 year old ds's are on course for level 6s and still dip into WP.In fact one re-read the entire lot over Xmas(along with a shed load of other more worthy stuff).

Have a masseeeeeve list of what my lot read but heart Wonder(every school should have a copy). Ironically it is a tad Wimpy Kidesque.My DS had the Wonder book of quotations for Xmas and loved that too.

Stitchhead series of books by Guy Bass.

As above the David Walliams books.

My DD2 enjoys books but is a reluctant independent reader. The above 2 authors got her to do this, and are very readable for an adult too.

(Wimpy Kid, Tom Gates etc are good for children to read but I'm not sure there is a very wide range of vocab, and as an adult they are not so grabbing really).
