My DS was born on September 1st. When does he start school?

My DS was born on 1st September 2011. When do I need to apply for a school place for him? All of the other children in his nursery room seem to be applying for places now so i'm a bit confused! His best friend at nursery is only 2 weeks older than him and is applying to start in September 2015. Am I right in thinking that because my DS has a September birthday he doesn't start Reception until 2016? My council website is really unclear and I've so far been unable to get through on the phone.

Yes he will be the oldest in his year group and will start Sept 2016. So he will be 5.

RandomMess · 17/12/2014 21:05

What Greencurtain says. He'll start a few days after his 5th birthday.

Yes same as my dd only 2010, we're just applying for her to start next September.

JuniperTisane · 17/12/2014 21:07

The age range for Sept 2015 start is 01/09/10 - 31/08/11 so your little boy misses this year's intake by one day. You will need to apply this time next year for sept 2016 start. The nursery will give you all the info you need.

Born 31st of August you go to school September 2015. You start 1st of September... 2016. Poor August babies.

My waters broke on September 1st 2011. I swear I was hanging on for the last few days...

Thanks for the quick replies. I thought I had it right but didn't want to assume and miss the deadline!

Don't bank on nursery giving you the information, by the way - ours don't give any information out about starting school, it's entirely up to the parents to find out about deadlines etc.

Yes there's a girl in ds's class with a 1/9 birthday and she is the eldest

SophieBarringtonWard · 17/12/2014 21:35

I have a September 2011 baby too. I've applied for her school nursery place this year but yup, it's a whole 'nother year till applying for a school place!

my child was born on 2/9 and is the eldest in the year. There is a child in his class born on 29th August i.e turned 6 3 days before mine turned 7 - crazy - my other sare all born between Sept and christmas - not that i planned it but i think they have an easier time of it, at least initially, as the older ones in the class

My DD1 is an August baby and she thrived when she started school at 4! Poor August babies??? Not mine! They are all different and should not be seen as incapable of being taught or not ready for school just because they are young in the year group. Mine was far more mature than a lot of the boys, and some girls, who were nearly a year older. She also had a teacher who realised a lot of the summer borns were intelligent, ready to learn and should not be discriminated against!

My August born DS is also thriving (Reception this year). I can't imagine him being in the year below, the Nursery class look so tiny.

He's the tallest in his class and not behind academically. I don't think it would have helped him at all to be in the year below.
