I'm after some advice before talking to the class teacher so I don't upset anyone.
When my older children started school they did letters and sounds, learned their sounds then got reading books - they had about 5/6 books per week, were listened to individually by the teacher twice a week, progressed well and are great readers.
My youngest has just started. The school do read write inc and now only do guided reading twice a week, so no other readers are sent home therefore only 2 books a week. I love the way RWI works, youngest is doing brilliantly with writing and spelling and reading. But weirdly the reading progress feels too fast, they have moved up a band having only read 4/5 books of the previous band. It feels like a big jump and I'm worried they're not getting enough breadth of practice at each stage.
So the question is, should I ask for extra readers at the same level to be sent home each week in addition to the guided reader? Or does this cause a problem with this particular system of learning to read?
Thanks
