Help understanding when to apply for Primary School

Good morning

I need some help my son was born Jan 2013 and I know that I am probably worrying but when do I apply for his primary school place? He is currently at Nursery and I don't know the age on when to apply for Infant school/primary School.

If you're in England you would apply between September 2016 and mid-January 2017. Your son would start school in September 2017.

No he's 2 in January, yeah I know I am a tad early but just want to understand how it all works.

For English state schools it is just before he turns 4 to start when he is 4.5. You can check admission criteria now although they might change. If you are wanting a faith school then you might need to baptise him now and start attending church if you don't already. Some schools ask for 3yr attendance record. You can also check that there is no priority for children attending the school nursery - although this is unusual.

Look on your local council website

You'd submit an application in Jan 2017 for a state Reception place to start Sept 2017.

Start looking the September before he starts and make sure you have done the application by 15th January.
