Does this sound right? Year one reading

My daughter is in year one and they read in groups once a week. She brings home her book and tells me that she gets to read one sentence out of the book each week. Does that sound right to you? She doesn't seem to do any one on one reading only in weekly group. Parents evening next week so didn't know whether to bring it up or is this just normal?

frustrated I don't expect them to read 1 to 1 every day, but perhaps once a week/ fortnight would be nice for the child to show off what they can do. You don't have evidence that it accelerates learning with those making good progress over and above anecdotal evidence that it 'works well'. You can overdo anything imo once a day reading is enough at the age of 5 (plus a bedtime fun read).

As I said I don't think it's a great idea, you obviously do we'll beg to differ. Lack of evidence, having to put up with informal feedback at the school gates etc.

I will be raising the 1 to 1 reading at parents evening this week. .....

That said I was under the impression they do read regularly 1 to 1 with those who don't get read with at home.

Nerfherder and mrz, if a child reads every day one to one in a school without a reading rota then your pupils are very fortunate. Nerf, I'm sorry I didn't see your post.

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread but if an adult reads 1:1 for a class of 30 each day, 10 minutes per child that would be 5hrs - the whole school day?

NerfHerder · 21/10/2014 23:18

Looby- 2 adults to a class in infants, 18 in a class. 45 minutes.

Actually, every few months, they get to read to the Y6s for a week- and they really love that. It makes them feel very proud of themselves, reading to the big boys and girls. Smile

NERF is this a state school?

NerfHerder · 22/10/2014 19:32

No. mrz's school is though.

Loobylou3 · 22/10/2014 20:08

Did I misunderstand? Did mrz say she read once a week individually but you said once a day? Sorry, like I said I haven't read the whole thread but just very interested to see what happens.

sorry, you're right, think frustrated misread upthread.
