Please help.

DS has got to write a poem using Onomatopeia words. He literally has no idea what this means. If I'm honest, I'd never heard of it either, though am clearer thanks to Google!

Help of any kind would be appreciated. Me and poetry are miles apart.

Words like boom, crash, splash. They sound like what they are. Badly explained!!

Look here for some egs

Something like this?

Splish, splash, splosh
The rain goes pitter patter
Bam! Baang! Crash!
Thunder thwack and clatter

Old Macdonald had a Farm - full of them too

Old Macdonald had a Farm is full of them too!

ilovepowerhoop · 11/10/2014 17:52

The rain splashes on the ground
while thunder booms through the rustling trees
The mouse squeaks as it runs around
and the boy splatters the mud all over his knees

(a bit crap, sorry!)

It's not just about obvious words like bang, crash etc it's also about picking vocabulary that really sounds like at fits what you are writing about eg the soft breeze whispers though the trees - sI the soft s sounds and drawn out long ee sounds give the impression of the wind. Or the hard jagged rock made of crags and blocks - lots of harsh ck sounds and sharp 1 syllable words to emphasis the hard rock

Porridgekisses:

If your DC has read 'We're going on a bear hunt' - he knows what onomatopeia is - he just didn't know the great big beastie of a word.

- after every 'Oh no we've got to go through it' - there's an example of onomatopeia.

Swish, Swash, Swish, Swash....

Splosh, Splash, Splosh, Splash...

Squelch, Squerch, Squelch, Squerch...

HTH
