Are these low reading targets for year 2?

Just thought I would check on here before I bother the teacher. Ds is year 2 and on purple reading level so thought he was doing quite well. Got given his targets for this term on Friday and they are 1) know the difference between fiction and non fiction - well he has known this since year reception! 2) talk about main characters and if they are good or bad

These just seem very simplistic and when I have tried to look them up it seems as though they are targets at a 1b level! Is this right or have I not understood these targets?

Sounds like a box ticking exercise. Can he read? If he can I wouldn't worry too much. State schools are very Oxfed orientated and love their "smart" goals!

Very ofstead obsessed school. He can read very well is this just something they have tondo then?

When he talks about good and bad characters focus on him explaining why he has come to that conclusion, where does the text demonstrate it etc. really develop his answers. Hope that helps :)

Sounds pretty easy to me too. My Y2 DD's target is:

"Search for, and find, information in texts using different strategies, tools and methods."

If anything I think this is quite a difficult target but I would expect there to be some sort of middle ground. Why don't you have a chat with the teacher and say he is already able to do those things with ease and you like them to consider revising his target.

Just checked back with my DC's target lists and they had those targets when on turquoise level - which IIRC is the level below purple so doesn't sound wildly out with your experience. Maybe teacher is trying to tick off the last Level 1 requirements? If he can do them easily, then he needs to demonstrate this is in school and he'll get moved to the next target. TBH, I never found that targets were very useful - it's not as though they don't do anything else but work towards them!
