Quality of Free School Lunches

My child's infant school has always provided delicious, nutritious school lunches but we paid more than average for this high quality. Now school lunches are free our school is trying to continue to offer the same quality but as a result is starting to run up a fairly substantial deficit. It's my understanding that the school cannot charge parents a "top up" - lunches must be free. Is this a problem at your school? Does anyone know whether parents can contribute extra if they wish to?

My school has asked parents to make a voluntary contribution on 50p per day - the difference between the money provided by the Government and how much it costs to provide. No idea how many are.
