Really easy targets

DS has just gone into year 2 and his half termletters targets have come home. They are to be able to write a number line to 20, recognise coins, subtract numbers up to 10, count up in 10s and count forwards and backwards up to 30. He can already do all these things. He was in the top stream in the previous class and is in the top stream in this class, but the targets seem to relate to the whole year group.

Is this normal?
What is the point of the targets like this?
Am I expecting too much to think that if they are going to stream kids within the year, they should give streamed targets too?

I am presuming they are his individual targets not a general 'our class will be...' targets?

I have no idea what my Yr2 DD's targets are for maths, she hasn't mentioned any and the school don't tell us but she did tell me she has 2 English ones for writing and they are, I would think from what they are, personal ones (probably apply to a few people obviously but they are right for her).

I would ask him what he is actually doing in maths, I would expect he is already working beyond that if he could do those things last year and the targets are general ones.

It sounds like they are general targets for the class, designed to ensure that all children have the basics in place. If they don't apply to your son, I would do two things.

  1. continue to work on maths at an appropriate level at home
  2. ask him about the maths he is doing at school, and talk to the teacher if it doesn't sound challenging.
