Is there a maximum number allowed in Year 3 class.

DD's Year 3 class has 31 pupils. Is there any limit once they are in Juniors? The school is an Academy if that makes any difference.

Infant Class Sizes regulations no longer apply once children reach year 3, but that doesn't mean that the school can keep adding pupils. There isn't a legal ceiling, but it does depend on the actual capacity of the year with regards to space available in the room, staffing, etc.

Thanks. I expected as much. Presumably the extra person brings extra funding too.

My dh class has 37 in and no extra support. Depends on the school.

37! Wow!

Funding for every school is mainly by the number of bums on seats. That is based on a count of pupil numbers on a set date, which then informs the funding for the subsequent year from next April onwards for maintained schools and from next September onwards for Academies.

Ks2 classes at our school are considered full at about 33 pupils. Any more than that and seating etc becomes difficult. Ideally, in terms of funding, we would have 33 ish in each ks2 class. Under 30 and the budget becomes tighter than the school would like.

The maximum you'd expect, even in a decent sized classroom with space to take more, is about 34 and it would be unusual for it to go above that.

A school not to far from me has around 45 in its year three class (varies by 1 or 2 each year). It has 20-25 in each of two classes in the infants and then combines those classes into one class at year 3. There is one teacher and teaching assistant in the class.
By the start of year 4 there is usually around 40 in the class because the other 5 have been removed and sent to the local prep school as the parents are frustrated by their child being in a class of 45.

My DCs go to an infants school where classes are limited to 30 (although my DS's reception does have 31). When they move up to the linked junior school the classes tend to go up to 32. If someone wins an appeal though the class size can go up from there as long as there is still space etc. The school strongly resist going above 32 though.

KS2 class size is only governed by the size of the classroom
