Can any teachers clarify what the recommended approach is to differentiation under the new NC. Is it any different now there are these set programmes of study for each year group?

I assume it will be the same. The teacher will differentiate the work to be done in different ways wherever required.

In things like Maths the guidance given on recent courses has been to teach to the child's capabilities. So if a child is working at year 1 level but they are in y3 then their work should be at y1 level. Same with children working above the expectation for their current year group.

There were programmes of study in the old curriculum the new curriculum actually gives teachers lots more freedom

That's reassuring.
