How to help with spelling

Hi

I've twin boys just started year one. They've spelling homework once a week. Spelling is new to us so I'm looking for ideas as to how best approach? Any experience appreciated.

I use a mixture of copying the spellings, making sure child can read the word and then sounding out the spellings as written down. I also use a brilliant app on the iPad called squeebles.

DS has just gone into Y3 and he struggles a bit. Repetition is the key for us....
