Should my child use phonics apps to improve his reading?

My son started his Year 1 this September. According to his Reception report, then his reading development is up to the standards.

However, he cannot read or recognize every word/sentence yet.

I was wondering if it is useful to buy some phonics apps for him and play on the iPad.

Has anyone tried and notice improvement by this method?

Thank you

Just hear him read lots? My daughter is in Y1 and reads very well. She still can't read EVERY word. We look at the words she struggles with together and I can show her how to sound them out.

Are the words and sentences at his current level of knowledge or do they contain spelling for sounds he hasn't been taught yet?

If you decide to look at apps be aware that the standards can vary greatly. I would recommend the Sounds-Write initial code app for beginner readers.
