What determines your "literacy" group

Hi

DD has started year 2 and tells me that they will be put in different literacy groups (I'm assuming according to ability). The thing is I'm a bit confused as to what this will be determined by as whilst DD is good at reading (both decoding and comprehension) has a great vocabulary and good creative ideas she has fairly poor writing skills both the actual writing and spelling and the ability to translate her verbal ideas onto paper.

So what would have the greater weight reading or writing and if it is writing could she be in a lower group as she struggles with this?

If the school has groups for Literacy then it should have different groups for different aspects, so a writing group AND a reading group.

That makes sense thanks!

Literacy will usually be based on their writing ability. Reading groups will be based on their reading ability.

Agreed. My literacy groups are based on writing ability (and also how good they are at working independently). But they don't always do literacy in these groups - sometimes they sit in their mixed ability topic groups, depending on the activity we are doing. Reading groups are different, based on reading ability.

I don't have any just a class

Our KS1 literacy groups are mixed ability.

Sadly ours are set by "ability" in Y1 - just feel a bit down as despite doing lots of work with DD her writing is still poor. She has worked hard on her reading and is doing well in that but I fear that staying in a low set will demotivate her even more with her writing.
