Summer uniform in September

Apologies if this has been asked before, I am a relative newbie here Smile I was just wondering if anyone's DD ever came to school after the summer break in the school's summer uniform? I was thinking that if the weather is still warm, surely they can? My DD is starting Reception next week and is easily hot in layers/thick clothing. When I went to get her a summer dress from the uniform shop, the lady seemed aghast that I was considering puttinf my DD in summer uniform when she starts school.Shock

Most of the girls in DS1s year wear summer uniform if it's warm so up until the end of September. A summer dress, socks and cardigan is plenty warm enough in a class room

MirandaWest · 01/09/2014 11:19

DD has always gone back to school in summer uniform - she's very nearly in year 4 Smile

KERALA1 · 01/09/2014 11:19

Strange lady! My girls wear summer dresses well into September if it's warm you are definitely doing the right thing. Note we at state school don't know if privates have stricter rules

thetropicmama7 · 01/09/2014 11:23

I am so glad I am not alone! I felt like such an oddball when the lady told me that. Perhaps it was because they didn't have any summer dresses in stock! Grin

Start in summer uniform if it's still sunny. You can wear summer or winter until half term, and then after half term it's winter uniform only. Most girls go back to school in their summer dress to get more wear out of it, because most of the year they're in their winter uniform.

CMOTDibbler · 01/09/2014 11:26

At ds's school they can wear either uniform till after half term, and most older children go back in summer, but reception usually wear winter as no one buys a new dress to wear for 6 weeks

SoonToBeSix · 01/09/2014 11:29

I would check with parents from your dd's school. I once sent my dd in summer uniform . She was the only child wearing it and came home in tears as she was so embarrassed.

MirandaWest · 01/09/2014 11:30

Actually some girls wear summer uniform in winter, albeit with tights.

DS does wear shorts all year round (not sure he's going to enjoy having to wear trousers when he goes to secondary school next year)

atticusclaw · 01/09/2014 11:31

I'd do normal uniform on day 1 but then switch to summer dresses after that if others are wearing them.

clary · 01/09/2014 11:32

YY summer dress is fine till end Sept at least. DD used to do that (until she got to yr 5 and refused to wear them any more

Miranda yes my DS2 wore shorts all last year lol even in Dec/Jan. He has to wear trousers now tho as he is in yr 7 Grin

scaevola · 01/09/2014 11:42

If it's still warm, then most pupils (yr1-6) will be in summer uniform and change over according to weather. I think everyone's in winter uniform by the time they come back after half term.

(I omit reception from this, because most of them seem to be winter uniform from the off, because parents don't necessarily want to spend on stuff which might be suitable for a very few weeks in autumn and not fit by spring).

Lonecatwithkitten · 01/09/2014 12:56

We are allowed summer uniform for the whole of the summer term and the first half of the autumn term.
No winter uniform in the second half of the summer term.

Thanks so much for all your helpful comments. I do have a couple of summer dresses that were given to her. I might check out what the others are wearing on the first day and go from there although my DD never minds being different anyway. My DS also wears shorts throughout the year and I am happy to find out a couple of you have DSs who are the same. I have 5 pairs of unworn trousers from last year I really must try to sell/give away.

DD started reception like 80% of her classmates in winter uniform. The rest had older siblings and wore hand me downs.

I think I bought 2 Summer dresses and we had a couple of really hot days so DD wore them and they still fitted in early Spring where again the. Weather was nice.

Come Year 1 the majority of girls wear Summer uniform when returning to school. I asked DD today what she wanted and she just looked at me as if I was mad thinking about winter uniform.

TimeForAnotherNameChange · 03/09/2014 12:41

Or school don't care whether they wear pinafores or gingham as long as it's part of the uniform list. Mostly girls start off in summer dresses to end September, and the boys in shorts. There's usually also a handful of Y6 boys who try and make it through the whole year in shorts, rain, snow, or shine, +25 or -5. It's become a bit of a tradition in our school!

Mouldypineapple · 03/09/2014 18:51

My dd started reception today. I put her in winter uniform just to see what the rest of the school was doing. There were quite a few girls in summer dresses including a few new starters so tomorrow she will wear her summer dress!

Galena · 03/09/2014 19:04

Last year it was BOILING in early September so I did a rush purchase of summer dresses the day before she started school and she wore for much of the first week or two.

This year she has also gone back in summer dress.

thetropicmama7 · 04/09/2014 15:39

I dropped off my DS today and kept an eye out for what the girls were wearing as my DD, going into Reception, does not start until next week. Sure enough, about half of the girls were in their summer gingham dresses with just a cardigan to ward off the morning chill. I guess I will have to wait and see what delights the weather has in store for us next week! Wink

We go back in summer uniform until 1st October. Just as well, I don't have the energy for winter uniform after 6 weeks off Wink

Butkin · 05/09/2014 12:49

DD will be going back in Summer Uniform on Monday. They can wear Summer until Half term (or Winter) but only Winter afterwards.

Not surprised about shop's reaction though as rare to buy a summer outfit now as probably grown again by the time you wear it again after Easter.

Picturesinthefirelight · 05/09/2014 12:51

It depends on the school.

When dd started primary you could wear summer dresses up to half tem but now it's summer term only.

Dd started reception in a summer dress as nursery had the same uniform. Children who were totally new to the school wore winter uniform.

Picturesinthefirelight · 05/09/2014 12:53

If your school doesn't have an attached nursery with the same uniform then I almost guarantee everyone starting in reception will be in winter uniform.

Older years may be in summer still.

negrilbaby · 05/09/2014 21:34

DCs school allow summer uniform for summer term and first half of Autumn.

Last year DS was the last boy in shorts towards the end of October - they're not allowed to wear shorts after half-term.
DD started reception in a summer dress (she'd been to the pre-school so had them from before the summer holidays)

alwaysdoinglaundry · 05/09/2014 21:39

When my daughter started reception last September it was boiling. I jst bought her summer dress a size too big, it fitted ok in September and was fine the next summer.
