DS1 who is 4 1/2 has just started in reception class and refuses to use the school toilets. He is going from 9am-3.30pm without a wee and refusing to drink during the schoolday. He gets hysterical`if his teachers try get him to use the toilets as a result he's absolutely desperate for a drink and a wee by the time he gets home. He makes a mess of the loo at home because he can't wait and is now regularly bedwetting as well when he was mostly dry during the summer. Any advice/suggestions on improving the situation.

Poor thing, it's such a big thing, starting school. How long has he been at school? Is it a matter of days?

Do you go into the classroom with him at the start of the day or to pick him up? Would the teachers let you take him to the loo there before or after the school day a couple of times to get him used to the idea of going there? Sort of head it off before it becomes a huge thing in his head. Obviously you can't do it for an extended period, but once or twice to try to figure out what it is that's bothering him, maybe.

No advice I'm afraid but just wanted to reassure you that you're not on your own as a couple of the mums at school were talking the other day about their boys being like this when they started school.

Their boys are now yr2 and I think they will wee at school now (if desperate) but will only poo at home.
