Changing school before September...

I am moving house and will be 15 miles away from my daughters current school. There is a school in my new town which is less then a mile!

My eldest will be starting year 2 and my youngest will be starting Reception. Is it doable to move them with such little notice? If I dont do it now I will wait until after the Christmas holidays and start the new term there.

Are there spaces available now ? If so still plenty of time but you need to contact the LA as soon as you have confirmed exchange/signed lease for new address. If the school is full, you would put them on a waiting list and as places come up you would be expected to take them up asap, not hold out for after Christmas.

I phoned the LA today. She said I need to fill out the forms and post one off for my eldest and post my youngests through the school door! My concern is that there is less then a month. She couldnt tell me if there are any spaces. I will try phoning the school on Monday. Thanks :)

I would fill out the form now to get your name on the list and call the school. If there is not space available, then they will call you when one is available. If it is near the end of term, you can then advise the school of the start date. However, if you don't turn your form in and wait for the school, you may find that someone already on the list will get the space i.e. not on list, no space no matter the reason. I hope that makes sense. we are in London and it took us 3 months for a place.

i am surprised that the LEA has said to contact the school as they are the admission authority for state schools unless you are trying for an academy or religious school.
