Foreign subtitled movies for children?

Possibly a daft place to put this post but I tried the movies board and got nowhere!

Recently showed 7yo DD The King and the Mockingbird and she LOVED it (as did I!). A lot of the film has no speech anyway, but where there were subtitles she was just about able to read quickly enough to follow the plot. It made a nice change from Disney etc.

I am trying to get hold of Ernest and Celestine as it came up on the 'similar items' bit on Amazon, but I'd love any other ideas

What about some of the studio Ghibli stuff? Some of it isn't appropriate for a 7 year old and most of it has been badly dubbed into English, but you might be able to get hold of some subtitled copies in the original Japanese.

Seen them all already :o (well we have - as you say, some are most definitely not appropriate for children!) we did see the dubbed ones. Trying them subtitled is a good idea though thanks. I'm actually planning to start learning Japanese after summer myself.

We are getting quite into watching anime (it's something my teen DSD and I have really bonded over) but it's hard to find much that is aimed at children beyond Ghibli. If you have any further suggestions that would be great. DD loves Totoro, Kiki and Ponyo especially, and Panda go Panda. Not interested in the Pokemon type stuff though.

I've become really interested in animation in general recently so it's exciting for me to be seeing new (and old!) things from other countries.

I actually don't want to give Le Roi et L'Oiseau back to the library... I love it so much! It's on my wishlist for when it goes down in price. I even found the sheet music for the main theme online. Lovely :)

I was thinking about Belleville Rendezvous, I really enjoyed that a while ago but I see it's a 12 - my memory is crap and I can't remember what would make it a high age rating though.

I think it is about the subject, it is quite an adult theme not really a film for children putting a Mickey poo in the toilet and flushing it?

Clearly I need to watch it again (without DD obviously) :o

Sorry it was "Les mysterieuses cites d'or". It is great for the 7/10 years old the heros are the children, and Captain Harlock .

Dd and I saw The Red Balloon and White Mane/Crin Blanc at the cinema a while back. Enjoyed them both, although White Mane has a sad ending.

Ah that would explain why I couldn't find those ones :o will look at those and the town called panic one thanks :)

Catmint We are watching that at the moment (mysterious cities of gold)! It's something we can all watch together. I am looking out for Dogtanian at a reasonable price at the moment for when we've finished it. We liked Battle of the Planets too, with very funky theme music.

But these are all dubbed rather than subtitled (in my versions anyway).
