St. Olave's York v.s. local primary school?

we just moved back to the country a few weeks ago and DS has already started going to a state primary school in York. He is currently year 3 and will be year 4 after this summer. Previously he was at anBritish curricumlum based international school overseas. We are still 'observing' how he is doing at a state school and at the same time, looking into the option of a private school. I wonder if any of your children have taken the entrance exams of St. Olave's York at the age of 11? How should a child prepare for the test? Also, would a previously state school educated child fit in well socially and academically at a private school? Any advices/experiences are welcome!

Only know of St Olaves by reputation - which is good for academic/sporty types. We moved DS from state to a selective private (which plays fixtures against St Olaves) for start of year5 last Sept. No tutoring on advice of the Headmaster, just Bond books for VR & NVR practice. I guess it depends on the demand for places. We knew year5 probably an easier in than yr7 (but more sat exams than were successful).

DS has fitted in well and his recent report says he has made a firm group of friends. Sport has been key to that I feel. His primary wasn't good on team sports but DS was enthusiastic so he had joined a village cricket club which meant he has ended up in the teams. So my advice would be if your child is at all sporty point them at rugby and cricket now.

Yorkieduckie- I appreciate this is an old thread but that might be helpful as you’ll have the benefit of knowing the outcome! Did you make the move to Olaves and if so did your child settle ok - also interested in the Int’l school - state primary - ind prep progression. Tying to get an insight about Olaves from parents with children there :)
