Worried about ds's reading and writing

He's 5 and 1 month.
He's finishing reception on yellow hand reading (he was ted band when he started reception) and I've attached a photo of his writing.

His numeracy is a lot stronger than his literacy. He has recently had glasses (+8.5) so we are hoping that will make a difference as had no idea his sight was that bad until a routine test picked it up!

Is this about average do you think? It's just one short sentence - the fish is swimming in the deep sea.

Or even red band!
He's a left hander too.

Well his writing is considerably better than my 7 yo DD's. We couldn't even read hers until about 3 months ago and she's going into Y3 in September.

Don't think you have much to worry about there.

I think that is super writing for his age. Neater than my DD at that stage (she's Y1 and considered a good writer by her teacher). If he's only just got glasses with a pretty large prescription I'm sure you'll see an improvement with his reading too. Although yellow is average for end of reception so not like he's miles behind but probably he'll move forward quickly now he has glasses.

I will be happy if he's about average. I think literacy wise he will be average so if he's managed that whilst not being able to see brilliantly then he's doing ok!

He quite likes writing but hates reading. I suspect he may have been slightly further on with reading if he would practice. But he won't and I haven't pushed it as he's so young.

I think you're right not to push too much at his age. Focus on reading to him and getting him to do bits. I do think his glasses will help though :)

Also try things like magasines with characters he likes, reading doesn't have to be school book.

I would be delighted to have a child join my Y1 class with that level of writing. Shows lots of promise!
