I got my daughter's result today, just a piece of paper saying 31, failed. Felt quite devastated
Please, please don't feel like that about it. Your dd has 'failed' nothing.
The purpose of the check is to identify children who need extra help so that the school can put it in place before they fall really far behind. This can only be a Good Thing as in the past struggling children could go unnoticed or left to 'see if it clicks when they're older', which meant that intervention, which really should be in place as early as possible to be most effective, was late, or non-existent with the result that thousands of children, who could have easily learned to read given early, rigorous intervention, have left primary school with very poor reading skills.
I do hope that you have given your dd big hugs and lots of praise for doing so well in the check. With a score that close to the standard I am sure she will sail through it next year.
It does have a further purpose of highlighting schools whose teaching of phonics is poor, but that places no adverse reflection at all on children's ability.
