How much should I pay to sew on name tapes?

Huge pile of new school uniform which apparently needs to be name taped and have hanging loop. Have tried iron-on and they don't survive the tumble dryer. Thought I could sew on each end so it could be used as a hanging loop too - seem to remember it's what I had as a child.

Unfortunately I can't sew well at all and don't have time to keep going with my hamfisted attempts. I thought of asking a local 18 yr old who is off to study clothing design, or my cleaner, but not sure how much to offer them. Any ideas?

The Mum of a friend of dd is doing it as part of their fundraising for a trip - she says 'Just give me about 20p a name-tape' and she gets lots of customers, although she said they usually give her quite a bit more. She does Cub/Brownie badges / swimming badges / etc too. People are usually so grateful, they press quite a bit more into her hand.
I reckon you'd need to charge about 50p per item to hit the minimum wage mind.

Use attachatag then buy some firm ribbon / cotton strips and pierce inbetween it would be strong enough and takes no time to do.

I know you haven't asked this, but I use the iron-on ones from mynametag.com, and have only lost one or two in the washing machine over the last four years. Must admit we don't use a tumble dryer though.

Hope you find someone to do it. Maybe you could offer e.g. £20/£50 for the lot, depending on how much there is. I totally agree with outsourcing something that you don't want to/can't do and that others will happily do for payment. You are helping our economy!

Sewing labels on is not as easy as it sounds. You get thumb and finger ache as well as neck ache. The labels arnt cotton anymore, a thicker poly fibre is used. 5 labels could take an hour. So the rate of pay £1 per label makes £5 per hour. That’s cheap. Not everyone can sew, it’s also very tedious. Iron ones come off in the wash, you certainly need to label sports socks. If at boarding school everything’s needs to be named. Good luck!

@Lilleybet this kid is probably at university by now!

That said, I do them with a sewing machine and it's probably a minute per label tops
