Common Entrance/SATS

We are moving from Prep School at end year 6 into a state secondary. Our Prep doesn't do SATS and the state secondary DS is moving to is streaming yr 7 using SATS results. DS got 77% in his end of yr 6 Common Entrance Maths exam and 70% for English, Is there any way of using this data to translate these Common Entrance results into comparable SATS scores?

What have the school said?

spanieleyes · 20/06/2014 21:25

Absolutely none, it is like measuring apples against pears. Would they give him the SATS papers to do as an assessment to determine levels?

LIZS · 20/06/2014 21:27

Nope no correlation , they should just assess when he arrives. Do they do Pips or CATS ?

Janacek · 20/06/2014 22:02

They did CATS and he came out average IQ but his Common Entrance results were all over 70%. School say they are going to take his yr6 exam results into account. Don't suffer from Setitis myself and sure it will all come out in the wash. Just interested whether Common Ent Maths yr 6 is similar to SATS level 5 ?

If the school is half decent they will adjust sets at Christmas anyway.
DD1 moved sets for everything she was setted for during y7.

Secondary schools always re test and assess all children because so many are tutored for CE and SATs so they don't trust the results/marks anyway. My DD went to an independent school after state primary and the state primary never sent her records to the new school. Head did not believe in private education. Made no difference as her new school assessed her abilities.

Yes, there is a link - the ISEB CE Maths syllabus for 11+ is pitched at National Curriculum levels 4 and 5 (see ISEB website). Not sure about English though. DS' prep use a mixture of ISEB/SATs/own papers for Year 6 maths - those scoring just below 80% are high average, ie, Level 4a. High Level 5s score 90% plus. I guess you already know whether your DS is 'average' at his current school.

thanks I will look at website. I am also going to speak with his teachers tomorrow and see if they can give me an estimate SATS grade.

I would say that children who are working at level 4 can get up to about 70% in a 11+ maths common entrance paper. But the CE is straightforward and the SATs more problem solving.
