Will dd need a pencil case? Or anything else specifically day to day?

Pencil cases not normally required in state schools.

I would expect you to need

  • a bag (often a book bag at Reception age)
  • PE Kit (as specified by school-- though not all schools change for PE or have PE straight away)
  • water bottle
  • sun hat and sun cream if the weather is hot

and that's pretty much it. But check with the school - some schools have requirements such as need for separate pair of indoor schools.

Yes to everything redsky said.

You might also need wellies.
Some schools ask you to send in snack for morning break so you might want a little snack pot (or 2, my DD leaves hers at school at least once a week).

Do they do a home visit or a school visit day? They should tell you what is needed - for us book bags were provided but more robust satchel-like ones can be bought, PE bag is provided, they showed us what uniform was required (turned out every child got a school sweatshirt free on the first day too), and nothing else needed at all. Fruit is provided at breaktime.

You will need a supply of snacks to keep them happy on the way home (local pound-a-bowl guy loves the fact I buy bananas 3 times a week), and a lock if they park bikes/scooters at school.

Thank you. Scooter lock is a great idea. As far as I know, the only official piece of uniform is cardigan/jumper with logo. Everything else is m&s standard pinafore/gingham dress. My baby is too small to be going to school!!
