Finding a tutor

Hi everyone.

I am planning on applying to 2 local(ish) private grammars for my DS, who is currently in Year 4. I live in an area where very few people send their children private - not a very affluent area.

Whilst his current state primary is great and he is doing really well, I feel that he will benefit from some tutoring to help improve his English (currently 3a, but 4a in maths and reading) and also some prep for the exams. Tutoring is also not something that happens in my area.

Anyway, if anyone has any recommendations for a great tutor, I would be very grateful. The 2 schools I am looking at are Oldham Hulme and Stockport Grammar. We live in Tameside.

I am not in your area but have been keeping a weather eye out for tutors for the future around here. It seems like people guard this info very carefully! Maybe try the elevenplusforum website? They have info about state & independent schools and their exams/local tutors etc. Or try a local facebook parents group? Good luck.

Tricot39 - I had a chuckle at your comment about people girding this info carefully. That def doesn't happen where I live. If I even hinted at using a tutor where I lived, I would be accused of being above my station and be laughed at. It's just not the done thing where I leave.

You'd be surprised at the number of people who say that right up until the family find the DC has a grammar school place.

The forum will give lots of advice (including which books to get) if you decide to tutor your DC yourself, and other ways to support them.

Ha ha yegods! I was about to say the same thing. Different areas presumably have different cover stories. Here it is leftie liberal go to the local school no matter what it is like and if you consider grammar/private you are shunned by some for taking opportunities not available to everyone/those who cant afford tutors.

We get that here too! It's a pretty weak argument when you look at how much time those parents spend reading to their children or helping them with maths in their primary school years. That doesn't have to cost anything.
