Bag, pens and pencil case for reception pupil

I am from another country but dc is going to start reception in September. In my country all primary children carry lug around quite heavy 'school bags' worn as structured 'rucksacks'. However, in England, I have never seen any small children carry bags on their way to/from school so wondered if they just use a book bag to carry their stuff.

Also, what type of pencil case what you recommend for reception dc?

I wouldn't send in a bag or pencil case. In most schools I know they sell school logo book bags for about 3 quid and they are enough. Light to carry and just hold letters home and reading books when the chold starts getting them. Check the prospectus / website or call the school and see if they use them.

Generally schools supply all pens pencils etc so no need for a pencil case.

The school will provide all equipment your DC needs. Might be an idea to get a book bag (most schools sell ones with school logo on) as he will need to bring back a reading book, letters and possibly homework depending on the school.

I think almost all schools have their own logo book bag as mentioned and unless it is a private school then they won't be allowed to have their own pencil case etc.

Yes no need to buy pencil case, pencils etc.

Book bag only at DD's school; letters have come out to tell parents not to send in rucksacks or pencil cases. Rucksacks are bulky and can be a trip hazard when they fall from the pegs, as they invariably do frequently, and pencil cases are not necessary; the school have all the writing supplies the children need and it only ends up with kids getting upset if/when their own items go missing.

No need until they hit a later year.

DD has a bookbag from school which holds her reading book, reading diary and the weekly homework.

I also come from a country with large schoolbags from Day 1 so it took a while to get used to it.

Book bag and lunch bag at dgs school. They are not allowed pencil cases etc until Year3. Book bags and water bottles bought at school and have school logo.
