Hi Mums

My DD is 8 years old in year in a prep school in London, her teacher says that is she very bright but not motivated to do creative writing.. she is extremely good at maths and in the gifted/talented group in her school but isnt just motivated to do story writing or creative writing.. which is v imp for 11+.. any thoughts and ideas on how to handle it.

if it's not her "thing" and she is more into maths it is difficult.
it really helped my DD when i said to her that she needed to really impress the reader, use big vocab, lots of similes, descriptions, metaphors, go to town see how elaborate you can make a piece of writing. This might help her rather than try and let it come naturally like it does to some.

what kind of books is she into?
like art, it helped DD when she developed her own quirky style rather than being perfect.

saying all this, she's only in yr3 right? My comments above were from DD1 who is 10. DD2, i am just grateful she writes anything at all and she is bright. there's a long way to go until 11+ i wouldn't worry too much yet.

Usborne do a write your own storybook that looks good for inspiring kids to write. I've got one for DSD for her birthday. They are only about £6 on amazon.

My dd is the other way round. I haven't been able to find a chink into the "fun" of maths. However she found it herself last week..."graphs are so exciting".
So I guess I'm saying give lots of fun opportunities like reading plays aloud or making comics.
With my dd overt pressure didn't work! Gets that from her mother.
