Hi,

My daugther will be 3 years old this July and we are looking for a good private school in epsom/banstead area. Does anyone have any recommendations? We are looking at Aberdour School in particular and wanted to know of people's experience there.

Thank you

Hi, a late reply. Ewell Castle is situated only a few bus stops from Epsom town Centre. They have a Nursery site, and the Infant and Junior sites are across the road on lovely village grounds. The Early Years was inspected by Ofsted not too long ago and rated as Outstanding. My neighbour's granddaughter is only 6 years old and she is a pupil there. Her class has only 9 children. She is a very eloquent little girl, confident with a sharp quick thinking which makes me think that they are doing a good job at the school. Recently have spoken to her mum over the fence about Ewell Castle and she mentioned that the children are being introduced to Mandarin language this year. I have also heard about Downsend Independent School ( or something like that) but apparently is more expensive and quite mediocre. There is also Kingswood in Epsom, which has mixed sex nursery. Hope it helps, and good luck.

Another late reply (sorry!). I have no personal experience of the school - other than for visiting for sporting fixtures - the facilities are great. However, I do know of a family who were asked to remove their daughter at the end of Y3 as they thought she would struggle to keep up in Y4. She didnt have any specific learning difficulties, she was just not that academic. It can be hard to know how academic your DC is going to be when they are only 4 or 5, and so for me this would be a bit of a gamble. It might be worth asking some questions of the school about how they support children at both ends of the academic spectrum - those who are gifted/talented, and those who might struggle.

Ive got a child at Aberdour and we are exceedingly happy with it. It is a lovely school and the headmaster is very highly regarded by both children and parents. THe facilities are great and the teaching is excellent. We looked at loads of schools in the area, both private and state, and have feel that we definitely made the right choice with Aberdour.
