Primary 1 into year2

Has anyone transferred their dc from a scottish primary to an English and feel like a year has been missed.

We are relocating at the end of primary 1 (June 2014). At this time by dc will have just turned 6 by 1 week. I was advised on here before that they would go into year 1, however I am now told its year2? I'm confused!!

In year 2 after sept all the kids will be turning 7 (is that right?) which means they'll have had a year more of schooling.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone else who has experienced this and how their dc coped.

if he is turning 6 in June 2014 he would be Yr1 at the moment so if he started at his new school in June/July then he would go into Yr1. if he wasn't able to start until September then he would be going into Yr2. So yes the children in Yr2 from September this year will turn 7 at some point between 1st September 2014 and August 31st 2015.

He will have missed a year of school but I don't see this would be a problem. Reception doesn't involve formal learning so academically I don't see that it would count if that makes sense.

Our pre-school year is akin to England's reception year, so it should be a smooth transition. I've done it the other way at the same age, and it was all fine.

I thought P1 was Reception and P2 was Y1? Doing it the other way, if that's true, would be obviously an easier transition.

Having said that, a good school should be able to differentiate appropriately and give children the opportunity to catch up with their peers if necessary. DD's Y2 class has several children working at very low levels, some due to SEN and some due to language issues. They all seem to be receiving appropriate support and the children who have English as a recently acquired language are storming up the levels. One little girl in particular has amazed me with how far she's come between Sept and now. As your child will already speak English, I would have thought it would be possible for a decent school to help him or her bridge the gap, though it may be that he or she would be very tired at first and find the expectations of personal responsibility hard to manage.

Maybe you could get something like this book to work through over the summer, that will give you an idea if there are any gaps. It will be a long summer holiday (because of the timings) so it should be plenty of time to make sure your dc is prepared.

For my daughter, going from Reception into a mixed Y1/2 class which was mainly composed of Y2s, the biggest hurdle was the amount of responsibility they were expected to take for themselves/their belongings. It was all much more facilitated in Reception. It sounds like that might not be a problem coming from P1, though, if it's a bit more formal.
