Book bands... Cream?

DD has been moved to cream book band. I didn't know there was a cream band! She was on gold, then white and then says she missed a couple of bands and is now cream. Does anyone know what scheme this is and what NC level it relates to? Parents eve just been postponed and I am curious!

She is 5.5 in yr1. Could well be their own made up scheme but the earlier bands all followed the reading chest one up to white.

Some schools do make up bookbands. Ours does. You would need to ask her teacher.

She'd be into key stage 2 book bands, and there is no national color scheme for KS2. The two popular KS2 colour schemes (ORT & Big Cat Collins) don't have cream as a colour either.

Do you have a title to hand, or are these real (i.e. non scheme books) that the school have banded themselves?

I'm not convinced they are KS2 as they seem easier than the white ones were, although it often seems to be like that when you go up a band.

There is 'Jess and the bean root' and 'Raju's ride' which are both ORT snapdragons, and also something called snow dog.

googling says both the Jess and the bean root and Rajus ride are stage 8 books

Yes, but she's had stages up to 11 and some treetops on earlier bands! It all makes no sense!

You are right, that doesn't make sense! It sounds like the schools banding system (if it could be called that) is a mess if she's been reading stage 11 (which range from white band to KS2 brown band) and is now reading purple.

Unless they have done an assessment and dropped her down, or have a cream box for working on expression or something specific Confused

Whatever the case you'll have to ask to get to the bottom of it - can you pop a note in her reading diary or grab the teacher for a moment?

Raju's ride is definitely KS1 as I read with yrs 1&2 and have heard this book countless times!

Has she actually been moved bands, or just picked up the wrong colour books out a box they have been put in by mistake?
Both my DSs have come home with books of completely the wrong colour before and then back to 'normal' the next week.

Just to point out that ' 'reading chest ' did not devise Bookbands!!!
It was a team of academics!

I didnt say they did. Was just saying the reading chest website tells you what the bookbands/colours relate to.

as she is in yr1 could it be that once she has finished on level 11 they just let them choose from a selection of 'other books' which can be any level? Did she get to choose it from a library?

DD1 is in Yr1 and when she finished the lime books (book band 11) she was put on some early reader type ones which were way too easy so she takes her own chapter books in now which are more suitable. As they are only in Yr1 they can't choose from the library yet.

DD's old school had a cream level for the a stage between white and lime.

DD's current school uses cream for free readers.

Neither of these sound like your case and both sound like cream is a "school's own thing" colour!

DS1 has just been moved up from a "cream" level. Our school appears to have it's own banding scheme but cream was books at post white/lime level. His new band is a reddish colour which he has to get from the year 3/4 classroom (he's year 1 too) and is a stage 14 treetops/ ks2 book. Cream seemed to be stage 12/13 books.

Thanks for all replies. I will ask the teacher but will have to be at parents evening after half term, I was just curious to understand before then.

She has now had some extra books for half term which are also cream band...'rubbed out' and 'feeble man' which are both Ginn and seem much harder.
