Calling KS2 English SATS experts...

My DD was given a Reading Comprehension test at school that is clearly a photocopy of a SATS answer booklet. We were given a copy of the booklet to look at but since we weren't given a copy either of the reading booklet or the answers it is rather hard to understand the marking.

I have googled like crazy but cannot find it. The titles are: Night Life - Animals that come out at night, Night Arrivals, Sleepovers. Does anyone know where I can find a copy? Or does anyone have one?

That is not a Year 6 SATS booklet that has been published in the last 20 years as I have copies of all of them.

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 14:28

Ah. Year 5?

OP posts:
bamboostalks · 10/02/2014 14:35

Well possibly but if so it is ancient. The last official Year 5 published was 'Footprints in Space.' Are you sure it's not just from published WH Smith's etc material?

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 14:41

Does WH Smiths material look identical?

In previous years I have always been able to find the booklet and answer key by googling - the teachers lift the tests straight off the internet.

Well, it can look very similar, it may an NFER one. Can't you ask the school?

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 14:50

The school doesn't want to give it to us. We know why (political marking).

What is political marking?

ItStillLooksLikeRainDear · 10/02/2014 15:21

A company called CGP publish practice papers, it could be one of those?

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 16:37

Political marking = marking to make certain pupils or sub-sets of pupils look better than others so that the teachers look good. Ie not using the same marking standards across the board.

I have been a y6 teacher for years and never heard of political marking. I honestly don't know what you mean.

I haven't heard of the booklet either but it definitely isn't a past SATs paper (or past optional paper that I can remember).

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 17:55

It must be a French thing! Sadly all too common here.

OP posts:
missmapp · 10/02/2014 17:56

Could be a cgp booklet. Political marking is a ridiculus idea- how would it help anyone, the may sats are externally mark so any 'group favoured' marking would soon show up.

As yr6 teachers, we mark fairly and despair support each other, not try adn play one upmanship with diff grps.

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 17:56

Everything is done internally at DD's school - curriculum design, teaching, testing and marking are all a black box. Bad news.

I'm fairly sure it's a KS1 paper. Level 2-3. But I can't find it.

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 20:14

It's definitely not a KS1 paper - it's way harder than KS1.

OP posts:
mrz · 10/02/2014 20:16

It's definitely a Year 2 SATs paper Bonsoir

mrz · 10/02/2014 20:18

Sorry should read the whole thread ... the KS1 SAT paper in Night not the rest

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 20:20

It's one booklet though, with four sections - the final section has questions on all three texts.

bamboostalks · 10/02/2014 20:28

I think that nocturnal animals was a writing task for 2009 in KS1.

Feenie · 10/02/2014 20:32

Last official y5 was Changes, which superseded Footprints in Space. Not that it's at all relevant Smile

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 20:40

See - I knew that there were all these über knowledgeable people on MN and you are proving it! Which is why I am baffled at not getting to the root of this.

The level of difficulty of the questions in the booklet is definitely Y5 or Y6, not below.

Feenie · 10/02/2014 20:56

Never heard of it - and I would have said I know them all.

Would agree with others that it's probably CPG - they do look very SAT-y.

MissBeehiving · 10/02/2014 21:04

I have a CGP ks1 paper with Night Creatures and the Owl Child in it.

Bonsoir · 10/02/2014 21:07

I'm sure you do know them all, Feenie. So I shall take your word and assume that, unlike previous years, this is not an old SATS paper downloaded off the internet but has been conjured up from a paper source.

Thank you everyone Smile
