Dd is in the bottom class of junior school (year 3). She had an incident at school where she did quite a long piece of work wrong. I think a few of her classmates did the same.
The teacher apparently told them that the work was a waste of paper and threw them in the bin.

Would you as a parent or teacher find this appropriate?

No, I wouldn't find that appropriate. Pretty disrespectful of the amount of time they had spent on it. But if they did the work wrongly because they weren't paying attention, I guess I would accept that there should be some consequence.

Definitely not, and I teach in secondary school. If a number of children do the wrong thing I have to admit I've clearly not explained it well. Even if it's just one they have clearly worked hard and need praise as well as clarification of what they have done wrong, definitely never appropriate to bin work.

No I definitely would not! And I would be in there complaining first thing on Monday asking for a meeting with the teacher and year head/middle class head. I would check and double check the facts tho with my child and another child in the class. The teacher should had said that this work is not what I asked you to do was it that you didn't understand what to do in that case you should come up and ask or were you not listening? But they should not throw the work in the bin it's like the teacher is having a temper tantrum. My DD is in year 3 and I would be furious.

I teach yr4 and I would never do this! Every piece of writing is a valuable exercise at this age...if only for the handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation practice. Even if the content was wrong....it sounds like the teachers fault if a few of them made the same mistake!

Speaking as a teacher, it sounds like a frustrated teacher who spent a long time explaining something, only to have a few who weren't listening and didn't have the nowse to check what was expected.

I suspect your DD was also perhaps messing around, hence the not listening/mis-understanding, and the teacher got cross.

I've pulled pages out of children's books, when they've messed around and done messy or totally wrong work as a result. I don't know a teacher who hasn't done that. But I wouldn't throw work of a child who has tried hard but still got it wrong, and don't know a teacher who would...

I'd check all your facts first before complaining. I suspect you're not getting quite the whole story.

Go in and ask the teacher what actually happened. Then decide what to do.

I kept half my class in at playtime at the beginning of term to rewrite their work. They had been warned to do it in a certain way (basic things) and ignored the instruction. I crossed their work out in their books.

They have listened to instructions since.

My child in year 3 [I think] wrote about poo and wee wee and had to stay in at break time to redo his work [Fair enough!].
That 'work' was not for viewing in his exercise book at parent consultation so may have been thrown away.
I would have quiet word with teacher just asking what happened and why work thrown away.

I don't agree with this at all and no I don't see it as acceptable, regardless of why this is done. I think skiing has it right at such a young age. I will never understand why there is a need to crush a young child's self esteem, and you wonder why so many teachers get told to fuck off nowadays

DS had this in YR 1, being told that his work was disgusting and belongs in the bin, sadly he WAS giving his all using what he had interpreted as the instructions given by the CT. He then spent the remainder of YR 1/2/3 and now YR 4 disliking anything involving writing......He now sees it as getting into trouble for NOT doing the work is by far better than because he DID the work.
