Difference Y2 and Y3

Hello,
Just wanted a rough outline of the difference between Y2 and Y3, infants/juniors, KS1/KS2 transition.
I don't meant the curriculum so much as how it is the children use their time. Is it much more table orientated, less play, less playtime? More homework.
please can you tell me how it works in your school, and if there were difficulties, how these were met?

In our school (primary) the main difference is time.
10 minutes longer before going out to lunch (infants 12, juniors 12.10); no afternnon play and 5 minutes later home time.
Some yr3 teachers use the carpet for input but it's mainly table/chairs.

Yes, much more learning and less play at ours. Infants had 2 x 15 minutes playtime and 1hr 15 min for lunch.

Juniors has 1 x 15 minute playtime and 1 hr for lunch.

More homework but not unmanagable.

My son found the transition hard. He couldn't believe how much learning he had to do particuarly in the afternoon

DC went to separate unconnected infants and juniors so some of these differences may be the change of school and/or be school specific

They've noticed:

• No afternoon play (or only at teachers discretion)
• No free fruit they have to bring in their own but have a specific fruit break
• (the main thing) they were expected to be much more self organising. They had to write down their own homework in their diaries. More messages passed on verbally (of the we are doing PE on Tuesday rather than Wednesday ilk) rather than notes to parents all the time.
• Parents strongly encouraged not to talk to teacher for routine things, but pass on messages via diary
• Have to hand in own notes etc rather than going through office (though they did do this in Y2)
• Less time working in groups they seem to do more as a whole class, (though work differentiated)
• More lunchtime clubs (that they have to organise themselves to sign up to and go to)
• More say in the way the school is run issues raised via student council taken very seriously, whereas it was mainly lipservice in infants

much like Iwantacampervan described - except same leaving time.

In general KS2 (Years 3 - 6) seems to be more heads down and to work than Reception/ KS1 (Years 1/2) - where children could roam if desired or go for a nap in the quiet corner.

Definitely got the impression that day covered more territory - certainly our school introduced geography, design & technology and foreign language (in their case Spanish) in KS2 - in addition to rest of curriculum for KS1 (English/ reading/ writing, maths, science, history, art).

very little diff at our school, they are even treated as one phase, mixed yr classes, etc. Jump to yr4 would be bigger.

PastSellByDate there would be no roaming or going for a nap in Year 2 in my school, unlikely in year 1 even.
In year 3 they are expected to be more responsible for themselves generally. They drop their afternoon play because they have to have more time being taught.

Yr3 they are expected to fill any free time (waiting for the register to be done etc) with independent reading

They are expected to manage their own resources -pencils, whiteboard pens -they are provided but they are expected to look after them and keep them in their trays

Carpet is rarely used and there is more whole class teaching then work on a differentiated task independently or in partners

It's much more school like IYKWIM

At our school, all children start at 8.55, they all have a 15 minute play in the morning, KS1 have 1h15m for lunch and KS2 have 1h. They all finish at 3.30pm. There is less carpet time and more time spent at tables.
