Maths Word problems Year 6 - help needed!

Ds is getting upset and embarrassed about not being able to figure out how to approach these. They use the Rucsac approach in school. I'm sure the teacher is going to go over lots more examples, he understands the approach once it's explained to him and my plan was to talk through a few problems so he gets to recognise that through all the words it's just another standard set of problems and solutions.

He has progressed from really struggling at maths and is really working hard, which is why he's getting upset at being unable to figure out the solution, I don't want this to become a block for him.

Is there anything else I can do to help him at home?

Loads of practice is the answer. Like you said, it is just recognising that behind the words there is a straightforward maths problem. Once he has done more examples, I'm sure that he will have the confidence to tackle these types of question.

Thanks Scooby. While I don't want him to be upset and embarrassed, it's amazing he actually cares, this time last year his approach was to do the bare minimum to get by, but this year he's completely different. I think he has some catching up to do though but that'll come now the effort is being applied.
