Surbiton Primary Schools

Hi there,

We're just about to move to Surbiton and my head is spinning with ofsteds and reviews about best primary schools in the area.

We're going to be on the border of the Kingston and Elmbridge local authorities so think we can apply to schools in both areas.

I'd love to hear some first hand views on the local primary schools - my daughter will be starting in Sept 2015 so we've really got to get sorted.

You can of course apply to either borough, they are all good (well, St Matthews C of E has just gone down to Needs Improvement to the great shock of the parents - but means will be putting extra effort in). More to the point though is exactly where you will be living as catchments are small. When DD applied we would only have got into one school despite being half a mile in various directions from three of them. There is a distance calculator on the Surrey website if you're going to be in Elmbridge so you can measure distance from your address to local schools and compare with stats to get an idea of how likely to get a place you are.

I would think long and hard about applying to any school which is not your nearest. In this area schools are over subscribed and most have admissions criteria which do not prioritise siblings if the school is not your nearest and I know several people who have siblings in more than one school which is a PITA.

Hi, my DS goes to Green Lane School (comes under Kingston borough) which is in Worcester Park, he seems very happy there and it's a nice school, not too big with plenty of outside space. It was rated a 'good' school in the last OFSTED report.
