In your experience senua, not in mine

I think that OP should be aware that she is getting different responses, depending on the gender of the DC. It seems that schools are more jealously demanding of boys.

The trick, if you can swing it, is to get a scholarship for a sport that the school does not do. Then there is no loyalty-tussle between school and self county but the school can still boast about their pupil.

I agree with you senua

DSes school actually took his scholarship away in the end, because his football club matches clashed with school matches, and there was no way he wasn't going to play for his professional football team. It was very awkward for a while, and the Headmaster actually called DH and I into a couple of tricky meetings to express his annoyance.

With hindsight, we wouldn't have put him in for the scholarship, it caused more problems than it was worth.

Thanks bowlers arm I'll certainly bear that in mind, hadn't thought through the club/school potential clash, food for thought....

for what it's worth my DS got a sports scholarship at a very good sports school - he was at a primary school and outside school played A team club rugby and local club football (not academy). He is very sporty but did not have a "county" etc CV - however I think he performed very well at the fitness, agility and sports assessments on the day so would say he got his award for potential so it's worth a shot...
