Pre-prep entry age

I'm currently doing the rounds to research and register for our preferred pre-prep / prep schools in Surrey and Hampshire (we are planning to move out of London) and had anticipated a start aged 4. However, many advertise entry to pre-prep from 3. Am I likely to get my daughter to start at pre-prep at 4 (with the earlier year being a nursery)? I'm just not sure how the independent school entry is structured. I don't want to weaken our chances with the popular schools by not moving earlier and having her start at 3, I'm just not sure if this is 'optional' or how flexible schools tend to be with entry ages.

I'm sure all with have different policies I'm just trying to understand the general lay of the land when most that I looked at so far say aged 3!

TIA
