dd is in y1 and has been telling me that during work/lesson times they aren't allowed their water bottles. is this normal? shouldn't they be allowed water whenever thirsty?

That's the idea, but it can be very disruptive to have 30 children slurping away through lessons and lots of children do seem to use them as a comfort thing. Where I work we encourage children to have a drink after break, lunch, pe etc but if a child was properly thirsty or had a sore throat they could go and get their water bottle.

Ours have the water bottles in a box in the middle of their table. They can drink whenever they like and there are water taps in the corridor , should they need a refill.
