How to help with writing and storytelling

We had the fricking class bear home a few weeks ago and I was looking at the other children's entries. All fairly bland, no ski trips or anything excessive, but I was comparing my DSs handwriting and ability to tell a story (ie what they did) with some of the other children's.

On the whole the storytelling was ok, although in the end I did just write out some sentences for him to copy (please tell me other people do this!!) but his handwriting was very ropey, much too big, although when I got him to concentrate he was able to keep it smaller.

Any suggestions for how we can improve this and make writing more fun for him. I was thinking of getting a special notebook / diary that he can write in but try to make it fun.
