Can your reception child blend sounds?

Just that really.

I know that it will just click and yadda yadda but just intrigued. DC3 is in reception and doesn't get it all yet. I do help in class and I'd say only about 55% get blending at this point so I know it's no reflection of my child's intelligence before I get flamed for bringing it up. DC1 could blend from starting school Dec Birthday, dc2 from ict in reception (April birthday) dc3 is a June birthday.

Am laughing at JingleJoo :
D-o-g = cat.
I am getting this with ds2(5.2) am starting to worry a tiny bit. He can't even do words : cat, mat hat.

Apparently he is super advanced at numbers. But that isn't much comfort to me right now!!

JingleJoo I had some thing similar with DD1. Trying to blend the sounds for "tree". She knew tr sound, and that two ees was ee. I drew a tree as a clue.

"I know I know! Broccoli". There endeth my assistance.

She got the hang of it after a few months in reception (October birthday).

ds (late august) can't blend at all.....and neither can I (38.5) i had to have a lesson with his teacher last week, i'm not overly concerned, i'm sure he will get there.....on the other hand he is a total ace at numbers and sport Grin

No DS2 can't read yet. May birthday.

Ds gets it but struggles knowing what is an 'eh' sound and what is an 'ee' sound, he can sound out went, come, big, but struggles with we and he.

He is reading the biff, chip and kipper books.

oblomov I am incognito but you do know me from the Nov 08 thread Wink so glad to read your DS2 isn't getting it as my DS2 hasn't got a clue how to blend!!

He is very confident with the sounds but literally picks a total random word despite saying the sounds. c-a-t = dog sounds very familiar to reading sessions here Grin

I know it will click at some point and that might not be during Reception year but school seem to be putting pressure on as they seem to expect all children to be able to do it by now! This is very frustrating as when DS1 was in Reception 3 years ago, they took the view that children wouldn't be given reading books until they were able to blend, even if that meant they didn't get one all year which seems a much better approach than this 'one size fits all' approach they have now adopted.

Interestingly, DS1 was the first boy out of his class to be given a reading book and that wasn't until halfway through the spring term so clearly it is quite common for Reception children not to be able to blend at this point so not sure why there seems to be this pressure for DS2 to be able to do it Hmm
