How much to expect to pay for second hand private school uniform?

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on this one? I'm in facebook contact with someone who has some nursery uniform for DD I'm wanting to buy. She didn't put up an advert to sell it, I asked on a local board if anyone had anything and turns out she has quite a bit she hadn't got around to taking to the second hand uniform sale.

Said uniform sale is when I work and tbh this seems an easy option as she has everything we need so I wouldn't need to root around a sale for bits and pieces.

She hasn't got back to me with prices ye but just wondering to get a feel for these things how much would be expected/reasonable/value for second hand preschool uniform at a private school? I looked at the new cost of the items and nearly had a heart attack so not sure what second hand value is.

She may well be wondering the same thing for all I know and see this thread

It's 50% of the original price at my DS's school. But that all goes to charity.

Remember, if you have a dryer you really don't need much. I can wash and dry uniform ready for the next day when I need to.

Agree, secondhand uniform at the official school sale is always 50% of the new price regardless of its condition. I would want to see the items and check them over before I committed to buy them, especially for a nursery age child.

Secondhand price is 1/3 of scary new price for ours. Uniform can be resold through school-run shop and all but £1 goes to the seller (as long as you leave name tapes in so that they know it is yours. That means that each item bought secondhand which lives to be resold (and most of it does, the price is reflected in the quality) only costs us £1 to own .

I'm assuming if you sold stuff via the school second hand the school would get a big chunk of the money so if I went direct to this lady (assuming it's in decent nick) I could get a good buy? Just the coat is £85 new

It just meant 1 pound - I don't know where the funny squiggle comes from - it only happens from my phone

Ours don't have uniform coats, but kilts are about £36 new (£12 secondhand) and when they get to Y4 they have a jacket which they hardly ever wear which is £75 new .

Our school the second hand sale is more like 10-20% of the new price

Skirts, trousers, jumpers (cost £20-28) sell for£3
Blouses sell for £2
pe shorts/logoed shirts sell for £2
Pe hoodies (cost £25) sell for £5
Blazers (cost £30) sell for £15

Wow, huge discrepancy here from 10% - 50%

At our school about a third - blazers are the thing to get as they are £90 new!

Find out how they price it in the second hand shop and how much the parent gets and then offer something similar?

In our second hand sales, the seller sets the price - so the price varies and is also dependant a bit on how things wash. So the girls summer dresses look pretty much as new so are higher, the ks1 sweatshirts wash terribly. Ties are £1 which is a godsend.

I'd start at 30% of new for everything and see what she says

I've paid £35 for a £75 blazer
£5-£10 for a £28 skirt (depending on condition
£5 for a £30 summer dress
£12 for a £25 coat

Oh and £5 for an £18 jumper

I paid £1 today for 3 pairs of trousers from the second hand uniform shop - state school though...

Curlew, the 50% is set by the school shop. They won't sell anything that is in a bad state.

Clothes are effectively donated by the parents for the school to sell and all the proceeds go to charity.

Works well in my opinion.

Also makes sure nothing's too cheap...........

£4 for £12 polo necks (I think)
£5 for £14 skirts

curlew do you mean cheap as in quality or cheap as in not pay much? As if it's quality then it's all the same quality from the same place as it's all official uniform IYKWIM. No chance of any tesco skirts etc

I got a full set of uniform for free from a friends friend who has a DS a few years older than mine.

As you can't sell via the school shop, people will just give it away.

Is that cheap enough?

our school shop also sells everything at 50% of the new price regardless of condition but half of that goes to the PTA so you only get 25% if you sell it via the shop. I have bought lots from friends who have older children so I always offer them 50% (so they get more that they would if they sold via the shop) and they often throw in extra bits.

What type of uniform really comes into it. DD wears a kilt which can still look really good many, many years down the track and she also wears blouses that are really only good for about three years. Blouses sell in second hand shop for £2 even though they are £7 new, kilts are £35 new and cost £20-25 in second hand shop.

Ours are about half the full price if you buy them at school. However only the blazer price goes back to the original parent, the rest is donated to the PTA. Obviously one is not supposed to appreciate the cash enough to be worried about £20 for an unworn jumper.....

At DDs school to buy second hand through the school second hand shop it is

£5 for pinafores and summer dresses (£40 new)
£2 for shirts and PE shirts (£12 new)
£15 blazer (£88 new)
£25 coat (£75 new)
£3 jumper, skorts and fleece (£22 new)

All the money goes to the PTA though, not the seller and anything not in good enough condition is donated to a school in a different country.

It is worth having a look round for the non logo stuff online as our winter dress is actually cheaper from Harrods than it is from the uniform shop our school uses
