Just that... can anyone suggest fun algebra-based puzzles for my son in year 3?

For example the matrices of variables with the totals at each end?

many thanks.

Um - aren't matrices quite advanced? What sort of level is you son working at?

Check out dragonbox website and app

Crowler · 18/12/2013 07:11

No. Not advanced. Like the ones where you have two pineapples and one orange = 7 and so on?

thanks Jasper, dragonbox looks fantastic. I forgot completely about Itunes. I've just bought it.

It's great - my 'i hate maths' 7yr old DD is really enjoying it.

Crowler · 18/12/2013 20:13

We just started today, he seems to like it. He's been matching up opposites. Which I kind of understand, but kind of not... but I'm sure we'll get there in the end. Very well reviewed! Thanks again for the tip.

Hi crowler:

There are some fun maths puzzles/ resources here to explore:

www.primaryresources.co.uk/maths/mathsD3.htm

and here: www.primaryresources.co.uk/maths/mathsD1.htm

just explore - look for 3 or 4 in front of resource for resources specific to those years.

Hawaii edu (oddly enough) has these for US 3rd/ 4th graders = Year 4/ 5 UK - www.hawaii.edu/suremath/k4_12dir/k4_12menu.html

If you haven't come across it have a search through NRICH maths website - there's all sorts of challenging problems there: nrich.maths.org/frontpage

This is NRich Maths result for KS2/KS3 algebra problems: nrich.maths.org/public/leg.php?ct=0&cl=2&dl%5B0%5D=1&dl%5B1%5D=1&dl%5B2%5D=1&group_id=5&cldcmpid=&code=53#results - Children at large & sweet shop are fun for Y3/ Y4 age from personal experience.
