Primary teachers or anybody else, what ability/level is this maths?

Q1) Billy collected 25 conkers on Monday and 11 on tuesday but lost 3/4 of the total on his way to school on Wednesday through a hole in his bag. When he arrived at school how many conkers did Billy have left?

Q2) There are 25 ppils in the class, 3/5 of the pupilssupport Coventry, 1/5 support Manchester United, the remainder support Arsenal. How many pupils support each team?

I just asked dd1 to do it - yr 4. She systematically wrote down the numbers involved then reread it to work out what to do with the numbers. She got the right answer. I don't know what level she is but suspect 4 (something) as she is in the top group.

DD yr5 level 4a has just done it easily (and enjoyed it)

Well, DD2 (Yr 5, supposedly level 4C) got 27 for the first one because she didn't read the question properly but got the second one right; DD3 (Yr 3, level 3B) could only do both with assistance.

Interestingly DD2 got Q7 right away. Maybe it's the shopping context! DD3 came up with 30p, so again, not quite there.

I expect the teacher is giving them an idea of what they need to be able to and has asked them to have a go using their tables. All children should know their tables by Y6 and therefore should be able to do these questions especially if they are at the end of a block on fractions. Using and applying their mathematical knowledge is the main feature of Y6 and will really help in secondary school.

Also what did the teacher say when you asked?
