How do you prefer to get information re: schools?

Just wondering what you feel gives the 'real' and most informed impression & information about a school.

I'm looking at a variety of prep schools in the area for 4+ entry and all their prospectuses, websites, even tours give more or less the same impressions.

Do you decide to apply for a school based on the information given over the phone, or via post, or do you prefer to get all of it in person when you visit?

I thought the school websites would give the best view but some of them are very incomplete. Just wondering how deep I should dig before I fork out for the registration fee Grin

By talking to people who already have children there.

meet the head, have a tour (on a working day) with pupils and ask incisive questions.
