times tables in year 1 - do all schools do this?

I love DD's school but was really surprised to find dd has been doing ten times table at the age of 5. Just wondered if this is usual. Obviously it's worked as she's very confident and when dh said what's 20 x 10 she got it right (surprising us both). Sure I was older when I learned this... Obviously a while ago now haha

DD is in yr1 and they are learning 2 times tables (having learnt to count in 2s in reception).

At my DC's school it's year 3.

They basically do it in Yr 1 at DD's school but call it counting in 2s, 5s, 10s. I think it's actually a pretty good idea because it gives them useful building blocks/helps other stuff fall into place

Yes, 2, 5 and 10 x in year one is quite normal.

TheRoundTable · 13/11/2013 18:26

DD is year 1 and looks like they are also doing the 2x, 5x and 10x, but counting in twos and tens and fives rather than 2x1 or 5x2 e.t.c.

2, 5 and 10 are done in Yr1 but they tend to do it more just as counting in them initially before moving on to actually doing them as tables.

mycatoscar · 13/11/2013 18:50

Yes it's normal.

From September 2014 the curriculum states children should know times tables facts up to 12x12 by the end of year 4.

missinglalaland · 13/11/2013 18:50

My dd2 is in yr2 and they have not started any times tables yet. Her older sister, dd1, only started in yr3.

So our school is a little slow, it seems!

Iamnotminterested · 13/11/2013 18:55

2, 5 and 10 here too. One of their yr1 targets is to be able to count up and down in all three (which DD can do confidently) but I don't know how she'd fare if I asked her what 7 x5 was, I guess that comes next, can't remember, dd2 just one day seemed to know them but she finds maths easy.

bundaberg · 13/11/2013 18:57

ds2 is in yr one and they've done/been doing 2,5,10 at least, poss some more

i think they may have started on 2's end of reception year
