Can anyone recommend a set of books I can get DS1 for Christmas. He is 5 and has just gone onto yellow band books. id like to get him something he can read himself mostly but that is a bit more fun and to his taste than the endless storyworlds books that keep coming home.

DS loves non fiction books about different kinds of animals, the more ferocious the better. But I'm not particularly getting 'reading' books for him as he's still on pink and only managing cvc words at the moment.
We have some Songbirds books for reading that are quite nice, very decoding friendly and less dull than ORT.

You could try the Horrid Henry books. They also have the 'early reader' Horrid Henry books which are easier. Look out for cheap sets at The Book People. Flat Stanley, Secret Seven etc.

For yellow band I think Horrid Henry might be a bit tricky- the early reader ones aren't really any easier- all they have done is taken an individual chapter from a proper Horrid Henry book and made it into a single book , so fewer words on a page and more pictures. The actual text is the same. I think they are a good starting point for children that are ready to read early chapter books but are put off by lots of text on a page, a sort of less scary introduction to chapter books.
You could use them and share the reading together or something.
I would think lots of picture book type stories would be yellow band- eg Dear Zoo etc. Also what about the usborne early reading series or ladybird read-it-yourself or the apple tree farm books?

Argos were selling a set of Galt fairy tales that DS enjoyed last year.
